Syllabus HFT 3519 Convention and Meeting Management College of Business Dedman School of Hospitality Course: Time: M W F 1:25 to 2:15 pm Location: UCD 1103 Professor: Dr. Sean Chang Office: UCB 2200 Phone: 645-9311 Email: [email protected] Graduate Assistant for Course: Stephanie Hampshire Email: [email protected] Course Description: The course serves as a comprehensive overview of the Meetings, Events, Exhibitions and Conventions (MEEC) industry. MEEC is unquestionably one of the fastest growing segments of hospitality, and incredibly exciting and dynamic. Topics include determining needs, setting objectives, selecting a site, negotiating rates, designing programs, budgeting and developing contracts, speaker selection, marketing, on-site management and evaluation. Students will achieve a macro working knowledge of MEEC industry principles, practices, operations and management. After successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Gain comprehensive strategies for meetings, events, expos, and conventions in relation to facilities, services and logistics. Develop Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Gantt chart in a Microsoft Project 2007 platform. Acquire skills to plan and develop programs, agendas, budgets, and services in a Microsoft Project 2007 platform. Understand the financial and contract management implications related to executing a meeting, event, expo, and convention. Understand the basics of site selection, hotel and food service negotiations, and meeting coordination. Examine challenges related to developing and implementing a successful program. Explain the economic impacts generated by the MEEC. Describe the roles of a Certified Meeting Professional (CMP), and review the competitive environments of a CMP. Analyze and manage the risks of a meeting, an expo, an event and a convention.
