Homosexuality in Prison Over the years the subject of homosexuality in prisons has been kept under wraps. Some may even say it’s almost ignored and regarded as unmentionable in the hope that it will somehow disappear on its own volition. Unfortunately this stance is not helping prison management, officers and staff to come to terms with what is becoming quite a sensitive, troublesome and irksome prison specific issue. When the phenomenon of male inmate rape occurs one male is showing power and dominance over another male through the confines of prison walls. Without question both are extremely affected by the experience. The offender gains power by providing his dominance over another male. Considering the circumstances it is crucial to understand that with limitations to power behind bars, rape is one of the few ways to show an individual’s dominance. These men feel very limited to their previously empowered situations so when they are stripped of that they will try almost anything to feel in charge again, consequently that seems to usually resurface as rape. In contrast, the victim of these experiences is subordinate and de-musicalized, losing control of his own body. From this point on, imamates will view the victims of rape as feminine, even to the extent of being female. The victims will be subject to more rape and may even be considered property. (Knowles, 1999) An extremely disturbing element of homosexuality within prison is the alarming potential for the sale and purchase of sexual favors. The weak, the vulnerable, the destitute, and the bullied are all at serious risk of being targeted to indulge in sexual activities in exchange for canteen items, drugs or even protection. This concept is very strongly tied with gang affiliations in the prisons. A variety of gangs, mostly composed of African Americans, use rape as sign of strength, power, emasculation of the opposing and 2

Homosexuality in Prison for many underlying mental or emotional issues. These reasons are seen as the general terms of rape but in prison they are used to keep authority over others. In some extreme victimization cases of homosexual inmates, not only are these individuals raped continuously, but also they are seen as property and considered slaves to these more dominate inmates.
