Physical Activity and Chronic Disease Pregnant must be screened and consulted with Dr. before There is a PAR-Med form (a PAR-Q for pregnant women) Plays a major role in chronic disease prevention. Some chronic diseases may appear during pregnancy, they include gestational diabetes (due to abdominal weight gain) and gestational hypertension.

Who should exercise? All pregnant women should continue their exercise regimens only to a lesser extent. Women who were not active prior to pregnancy should consider participating in some physical activity. They need to wait until the 2 nd trimester 1 st 6-8 wks are nuerological development If Tc goes over 101 degrees CNS problems can occur

Why exercise during pregnancy? Exercise helps keep the woman from putting on too much weight during the pregnancy. There is a lower risk for gestational diabetes and hypertension. Allows a woman to maintain fitness level during pregnancy. Decreased depression Easier labor Quicker bounce back into pre-pregnancy

ACOG Guidelines (1985) – America College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists 1. Maternal heart rate should not exceed 140bpm. 2. Strenuous activities should not exceed 15 minutes in duration. (no high intervals) 3. No exercise should be performed in the supine position after the 4 th month. (will cut of O2 and glucose to the fetus) 4. Should avoid the valsalva maneuver.
