Unformatted text preview: Communication is a vehicle that carries you and your patient through the interview  An exchange of information so that each person understands each other clearly. Without this, communication has not occurred. (Jarvis 2004) Gather complete and accurate data  Establish rapport and trust  Teaches pt about health state  Identifies problems  Builds a relationship  Consider it a contract between you and your patient The contracts terms include a time and place  An introduction of yourself and your role  A purpose  A timeframe  Expectations  Participants  Confidentiality Sending : Verbal communication , the words you speak and tone of voice. Non verbal communication is your body language, gesture, eye contact etc.  Receiving is an interpretation of the specific content. Meaning is determined by past experience, culture and emotional state.  It takes mutual understanding by sender and receiver for successful communication. Liking Others: We as nurses offer warmth and care toward others  Empathy: We are able to recognize and accept others for who they are.  Listening: It is the route to understanding Ensure privacy  Refuse interruptions  A comfortable room. Reduce noise  Place distance of 4-5 feet between you and pt. (2 arms length) at eye level...
