Buddhism Siddhartha Gautama (563-483 BC) was in a class of related families called the Shakyamuni, or wealthy rice growers. Buddha means “Enlightened One” and in order to become enlightened, you must go through dharma. Herman Hesse wrote Siddhartha and he explained how one must eliminate human suffering. He witnessed suffering for the first time in his life because he left the walls of his home knowing that he was suppose to take over a high position and he was very moved. His soul went through 600 reincarnations and for 20 years, he lived with the Hindi Yogi and wandered, begged and was poor. He would sit with a bowl and wait for someone to give food by completely lifting off all materialistic items and made himself poor as dirt. This bowl, as in the stupas, represents the suffering that he went through. Siddhartha say under Bodhi tree and had insight about the cause of human suffering= Enlightenment. When he dies, it is said that his ashes were spread into the 8 original stupas for
