Yurts Refer to a lot in the coursepack- great pictures There are three domains that must be considered when surveying a site: o Physical form/structure- squares, triangles, post and lintel, mortise and tenon o Function- ex. Kivas act as accesses to the Kachina o Meaning that the people give to the dwelling Archetypal features o Orientation o Center/centering o Hearth/fire o Altar o Micro/macrocosm o Anthropomorphism Mandala Principles o Center/centering- organization/awareness o Interrelationships- unity of difference (micro/macro) o Implied Movement- 6 directions and body movement o The triangle, square and the circle all have a different symbolic meaning but the yurt brings them all together. History of Origin- mythology of Genghis Kahn (1162-1227) and the Ordons o Notice the similarities between ger and Genghis (jenghiz) o Yurt=urdu, horde= ordo (Russian) o The story goes that there were 8 white ordons (similar to the present day yurts) that surrounded the body of Genghis Kahn when he died. His body was in a secret place in the middle. He is now a venerated figure. The different thing with the people of the yurts is that they trace everything back not to a god, but to Kahn. Geographic area- India, up to former Soviet Union, China and Turkey- this is a massive stretch of area where these yurts are located. Notice the differentiation between the roof and the wall- it is two different pieces.
