They became the most prosperous and civilized part of Greece at the time. • In Homer’s time (750-600 BC), Greeks were organized into city-states where each one was politically independent from the other poleis (polis) which were ruled by kings. These contained temples, homes, a marketplace and communication that were surrounded by the sea which made it fortified. The people considered themselves as citizens, not just subjects ruled by a single authority. • The early-Iron Age was also considered the Geometric Age because a lot of the art and the pottery contained simple and geometric designs. There were no people or animal. These simple patterns become more complicated and eventually some geometric images. • About 750 BC, a new alphabet emerges....
