Archilochus Early 7 th centuryBC Paros Iambic- - a type of prose to advocate or defned his policies; standard dialogue meter of Greek drama-spoken poetry and Elegiac- nearly the same as Homeric in written in 2 line stanzas; consisting of dactylic hexameters and pentameters; moral. (Lyric) He was a soldier/poet and his work is sometimes earthy, sometimes lyric, and very often satirical. Archilochos took as his subject matter war, nature, his fiance (whom he never married because her father went back on his word--and became a subject of the poet's barbed pen), the sea (a particularly moving fragment is a eulogy for companions lost at sea), politics, the gods, drinking--in other words, he wrote on just about everything. Alcaeus Late 7 th century BC Mytilene on Lesbos Lyric His poems may be classed in four groups: hymns in honour of gods and heroes, love poetry, drinking songs, and political poems. Many of the fragments reflect the vigor of the poet's involvement in the life of Mytilene, particularly its political life. Other fragments of Alcaeus' work convey the atmosphere of everyday life in 6th-century Mytilene. Sappho
