Acidity of α‐ Hydrogens The hydrogens on a carbon alpha to (or next to) a carbonyl group are somewhat acidic. When an α‐ hydrogen is removed, an enol or enolate ion is formed. An enolate ion is stabilized by resonance. Section 18.1
