Tree Biology - FOR 3342C Second Exam Review – Spring 2011 The exam questions will mostly come from the topic areas listed below, arranged by lecture number for your studying convenience. I of course reserve the right to ask questions from anything in the lecture or laboratory notes. Lecture 8 - Water relations I * Know what water potential is, its components, and how it varies in space and time within trees and the soil. * Understand how transpiration from leaves and sap flow in the upper and lower stem vary in relation to each other throughout the day. Be able to explain how these things relate to water storage in the tree stem. Lecture 9 - Water Relations II * Be able to explain the interactions among leaf water potential, soil water potential, transpiration rate, and hydraulic pathway resistance. * If given the formula for transpiration, be able to identify how a change in a biological (stomatal resistance) or environmental (light, humidity, temperature) factor will change transpiration rate. Lecture 10 - Water stress and xylem cavitation
