HST 103 00:24 William Penn founded Pennsylvania He was a quaker He had a utopian vision… wanted it to be peaceful. New England- Plymouth -1620 John Winthrop and William Bradford founded Puritans Bacon’s Rebellion Led by Nathaniel Bacon Sir William Berkley is the governor of VA Thomas Matthews o Rebellion of certain segment of society; planters at top, poor whites who  are former servants, then Indians. o Berkley punishes the Englishmen to make sure the Indians are happy,  then they cry about money. o “Little Ice Age” – 1300s – 1800s – period of dramatic climate change that  lasts about 500 years. Temperatures were a lot colder than 1300s-1500s drought then flooding period… weather was too extreme and God was  mad and wondering what they did o Thousands of poor white former servants… poor whites are put in  between the Indians and planters… whitey wants seperation from the  Indians…. Berkley passes voting law that the only ones that can vote are  the planters or “land owners” so he raises taxes to protect the poor whites 1. Planters are convinced that indentured servitude is not going to work.  Makes  slavery attractive.
