Radical and the Republican Notes 23:11 Slavery degrades everyone. Slavery must be abolished because it is destroying America. Douglas doesn’t care about the economic concerns, or if northerners are  uncomfortable about the slaves moving north. Douglass wants to end slavery and that is his main goal. Lincoln does not believe slavery is the biggest issue. The civil war was not about slavery.  It was about the union.  Lincoln sent  hundreds of men to fight in the south. Response to abolitionist reporter end of 1862, “if there be those who not save the  union, at the same time do not save slavery, I do not agree with them.  If there be  those who not save the union, at the same time do save slavery, I do not agree  with them.” His MAIN objective was preserving the union. He believes that what the south did was illegal, seceding is not the constitutional
