Upon opening this reference book you might be surprised to see that enough classifications and scores concerning the shoulder joint exist to fill an entire compendium ± and not even all of them are included. This multitude alone illustrates why this book needed to be published. The intention of the editors is to provide all those who are scientifically and clinically engaged with the shoulder joint with a collection of original research and an easy way to find desired information. Classifications are categories that serve as a basis for establishing the degree of severity and thus a prognosis. Treatment options and proce- dures can then be planned. The task of scores is to evaluate the pursued therapy and measure the outcome. Together with evidence-based medi- cine, classifications and scores are measurable and reproducible tools that help validate the quality of our medical work. With regards to the content, we strictly followed the original articles and original illustrations and did not add our own rating, interpretation or evaluation. Only illustrations of bad quality were revised. The classi- fications are topographically arranged. When important, we also added classifications outside the border areas, i.e. in the field of radiology. The
