Alexander Cowan HUM-100: Perspectives in the Humanities Professor Toothe May 26, 2020 4-1 Short Answer: Intent for the Statue of Liberty 1. Having read the articles presented in this module, reflect on how their discussion of intent and the changes to it affect your interpretation or understanding of the Statue of Liberty. My understanding of the Statue of Liberty was always based on the idea of the freedom and liberty that America represents. I always understood the Statue of Liberty to be a gift from France, to our nation, mostly as a way to greet new coming immigrants arriving in New York. Having read the articles presented in this week’s module, however, I was surprised to learn the contrary. According to the article provided by McNamara, Fredric-Auguste Bartholdi, never intended the statue to evoke the idea of immigration. In a sense, he viewed his creation as something nearly opposite: as a symbol of liberty spreading outward from America (McNamara, 2019).
