Sociology 549, Winter 2006 Instructor : Paul von Hippel Your name____________________________ Pre-midterm extra problems due Th 10/26 at the beginning of lab Note . These problems will not be collected or graded, but you should treat them just like any graded assignment. They will be discussed in lab, and similar problems may appear on the midterm. 1. (2 points) A rapid-transit company asks you to estimate support for a tax to build a light rail system. Based on past elections you guess that about 40% of voters will support the measure. The company offers you enough money to survey 200 voters. If you use this survey to estimate all voters’ support, what do you expect will be your standard error? What will be your “margin of error”, expressed as a percentage? 2. (7 points) In the week before the California recall election, Elway-McGuire Research sampled 1,000 likely voters at random. Of the sampled voters, 538 favored recalling Governor Gray Davis.
