1. What were some of the challenges RIM faced to protect its intellectual Property and how did RIM handle those challenges? Protecting intellectual property is a very important factor, especially for IT sector. RIM was no exception to face the legal consequences. One of the important cases was legal action between RIM and Glenayre Technologies Inc for the Black berry technology. In 1999 Glenayre sued RIM on the patent rights of Blackberry technology. Later in 2001 RIM sued Glenayre in response to the earlier suit, saying that Glenayre has imitated Blackberry technology and applied for the patent rights. After a while in 2002 both RIM and Glenayre dropped their law suits and started working together on a wireless email device to incorporate Glenayre’s messaging software. Another case was against Handspring’s device when they copied hand held email devices. At this time RIM was forced to protect its intellectual property by obtaining the patent rights on hand held email devices in September 2002. After
