Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering ME 300 Thermodynamics Section D Fall 2010 Homework #6 due Friday, October 15 th Problem 6.1 A closed system containing one kilogram of air executes a Carnot power cycle. During the isothermal expansion, process 1 2, the heat transfer from the air is 50 kJ. At the end of the isothermal expansion, state 2, the pressure is 574 kPa and the volume is 0.3 m 3 . The thermal efficiency of this cycle is 50%. The air can be treated as an ideal gas. (a) Sketch the cycle in a p-v diagram. (b) Determine the maximum and minimum temperatures for the cycle in K. (c) Determine the pressure in kPa and volume in m 3 for state 1. (d) Determine the work and heat transfer for each process. Problem 6.2 The following information is given for a closed system containing 2 kg of water executing a Carnot power cycle: At state 1 the water is at a pressure of 40 bar and has a quality of x=0.15. During the isothermal expansion, process 1 2, the water is heated until it is a saturated vapor. The
