Criminal Justice 2350 Court Systems and Criminal Procedure Chapter 11: Trial: Roles of Major Participants Key Terms: Adversary System: our concept of justice, in which one side represents the plaintiff or state and the other side represents the defendant, while the judge acts as the independent referee. Bailiff: an individual assigned to assist the judge and the jury and to perform other duties assigned by the judge. Contempt: the violation of court order or disruption of court proceedings. Privileged Communications: communications between individuals that are protected from discovery or use in a trial. Generally, communications between a party and his or her attorney are privileged. Adversary System -Defendant -Judge -Prosecuting attorney -Defense counsel -Clerk of the court -Bailiff -Court reporter -our justice system is an adversary system, meaning that it has two sides.  - Adversary System: our concept of justice, in which one side represents the plaintiff or state  and the other side represents the defendant, while the judge acts as the independent referee.  Judge -The judge presides over the trial proceedings and exercises those duties and power imposed  by law.
