Criminal Justice 2350 Court Systems and Criminal Procedure Chapter 12: Jury Key Terms: Challenges for cause: a challenge to a potential juror based on the juror’s qualifications or lack of impartiality. Cross section of community standard: the requirement that the jury panel or list be representative of a cross section community. Death-Qualified Jury: A jury in which the members have indicated that under appropriate circumstances they would vote for the death penalty. Jury List: a jury panel. The list of potential jurors that have been summoned, from which a jury may be selected. Jury of one’s peers: a jury composed of a cross section of the community that was selected in a fair and impartial manner. Jury Panel: the list of potential jurors that have been summoned from which a jury may be selected. Peremptory Challenge: a challenge that a party has to eliminate a potential juror. Each side has a limited number or peremptory challenges. While the party peremptorily challenging a potential juror normally not required to provide a reason for challenge, the challenge may not be used to exclude one gender or race from the jury. Sequestered Jury: a jury that has been secluded from the public and the press. Generally, a jury is sequestered during the deliberation phase of the trial. Introduction -Once the trial date has arrived and the prosecution and defense indicate their readiness, the  next step is the selection of the jury. A Jury of One’s Peers -The only jury qualifications set forth in the 6 th  amendment is that it be an impartial jury chosen  from the judicial district in which the crime was committed.  TRIAL BY ONE’S PEERS -As the trial jury was created, it was assumed that it would comprise one’s peers. - Jury of one’s peers:  a jury composed of a cross section of the community that was selected in  a fair and impartial manner.  1
