Delta Plastics Inc. (B) 1- Prepare a 3-sigma control chart for both production processes, using the new and standard material (use of quality report in “Delta Plastics, Inc, Case A,” Chapter 5) If we go back and look to the reports given in chapter-5, we notice that only the numbers of defected products are given but we don’t have the number of samples taken or even the total production number so it’s better to use the c-chart and not the p-chart because the total sample size is not provided. The c-charts are used to monitor the number of defects per units. (Operation management, rd edition, p188). Let’s solve first for the standard material. The first week we had a total of 54 defects, second week we had 46 defects, third week we had 46 defects also and the fourth week we had a total of 46 defects. Thus the average weekly number of defected products is =(54+46+46+46) / 4 = 48 defected product per week Therefore UCL = + z = 48 +3√48 = 68.78 LCL= - z = 48 - 3√48 = 27.21 The resulting control chart is shown below: Now let’s calculate for the new material used in the production (the super plastic) 2 | P a g e
