Terrance McKnight CCPJ 5062 Dr. Vinson Final Exam – Cecilia Case Study December 9, 2009 Super’s Developmental Theory Overview Donald Super was one of the first theorists to take into account the effects of the external environment on an individual’s career decision. Due to this, it was easy to explain after his theory was developed why two individuals with the same personality, goals, and education, amongst other similarities, could have differing career paths. Central to Super’s theory were the idea of self-concept and the life stages. Self-concept is a picture of the self in some role, situation, or position, performing some set of functions, or in some web of relationship (Brown, 2002). This concept is shaped by feedback from the external world. Super figured that if an individual knows him/herself, he/she will then know what career will make him/her happy. The theorist believed that an individual seeks to confirm his/her view of him/herself through career choice; when the self-concept is confirmed via these means, self-esteem and work satisfaction improves. The caveat with this is that there is no one career that will satisfy an individual’s vocational needs. This is attributable to the diverse needs that one has at different stages of life. In each stage, the roles that one holds often dictate what career(s) would best suit the individual. Super’s theory takes a longitudinal view of career choice. An individual’s career story is often described in a snapshot as the intersection between one’s life space and life span (Swanson & Fouad, 2010). Life space is the collection of social roles played by an individual, and the environments in which they are played. There are usually two or three main roles that an individual has throughout life; other less-dominant roles are added and eliminated around these core roles. Life span is described as the stages in which one goes through concerning career choice. Super describes five stages in career development; the first three stages are revisited on a micro-level after each career alteration brought about by socioeconomic, personal, or vocational change (Brown, 2002). While the stages are linear, it is noted that not every individual goes through this progression in this order, and that one can regress to a prior stage. In addition, different individuals spend varying lengths of time within particular stages. The growth stage, from age 3 to 13 (all age ranges are approximations), is the stage in which an individual discovers and learns what he/she can do in terms of a career. Next is the exploration stage, from age 14 to 25, where one can gain experimental validity behind career aspirations by performing some work roles conceived in the growth stage. A greater sense of
