Chapters 12 and 13 Characters: - Finny as the “Christ like” character o Once Finny died taking Gene’s sin with him. (His death is more like an ascension).Finny redeems gene through his suffering and death. o Through the death of Finny, Gene gains peace or ‘salvation’. - Death of Finny was like the death of Gene because Gene was a part of Finny. o After Finny died, Gene took a part of Finny with him (pg.194) Symbolism -Finny’s death o Finny died from a ‘broken heart’. Although Finny forgave Gene, his heartbreak still lingered. o The stray bit of marrow that plugs Finny’s heart could symbolize Gene’s wanting to be a part of Finny. However, Gene and Finny are two separate pieces . o No one is invincible. Something will come along and change us-and it is then that our peace is surrendered to that change. Finny did not surrender that peace-rather he took it with him when he died. o
