Amazon.com: The Evolution 2 Amazon.com: The Evolution Competitiveness and expansion are two main focuses of today’s businesses, both large and small. Amazon.com is no exception to this arena. The ever-growing online company has used its resources to compete and expand in the online commerce market. Amazon.com has utilized a core competency of being a leading online retailer, a strong business strategy, a large database, and e-business and e-commerce to establish its place in the online industry. The Company’s Move Amazon.com began selling books on the internet in 1996 (Rainer & Turban 2008). Since then, the company has pioneered the e-commerce market and by today’s standards is a well established leader in the electronic retail industry. The founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, had a vision for his company, “Amazon.com will be a place where you can find anything.” (Rainer & Turban 2008, p 189). Jeff Bezos’ vision has been the core competency of Amazon.com. Twelve years later and after investing $2 billion in the construction of the company infrastructure to support its online store, Amazaon.com realized they were using a very small percentage of its processing capacity. The company decided to offer a portion of its infrastructure to other organizations and began selling processing power and data storage services to help run the technical and logistical side of their business. Some argue whether this bold move by Amazon.com is wise. Selling these services thrusts Amazaon.com in direct competition with notable gurus like Google and Microsoft. Is Amazon.com moving away from its core competency by selling these services? Not according to CEO Jeff Bezos original vision. Finding anything on Amazon.com is an all inclusive statement and does not exclude selling services to other businesses. Amazon.com is simply expanding the products and services it sells, in an effort to maintain its leadership in the e-commerce market.
