Professor Daoud Arab World Seminar 22 September 2009 Ibn Khaldun Ibn Khaldun was born in Tunis, Tunisia on May 27, 1332 (which also happens to be one of the days of Ramadan). Ibn is quite possibly one of the most important figures in the fields of History and Sociology in the history of the Muslim world. He is actually most famous for his study of history – he was one of the first to treat it as a science. His interesting story starts with his childhood; While in Tunis he received a ‘traditional’ education from his father – this was typical of his family’s rank and status in Tunis, and was much more common in his time. Luckily Ibn’s father was a scholarly person and was able to teach him a great deal. Over the years Ibn memorized the Qur’an by heart, learned the rules of grammar, law, Hadith, rhetoric, philology, and poetry. After a time Ibn had achieved much in these subjects and became certified in most of them. He continued his studies until the age of 19 when the ‘great plague’ swept over the lands
