Unformatted text preview: America in the late 30’s & 40’s Film 180 1929 - Stock Market Crash The Great Depression 1929-1939 The Dust Bowl 1930-1940 John Steinbeck 1936 writes “The Harvest Gypsies” articles for the San Francisco News. Grapes of Wrath published in 1939 Steinbeck wins Pulitzer and Nobel Prize for Literature The legendary Darryl F. Zanuck discovers market for films with social consciousness. In 1940, with 20th Century Fox, Zanuck produces The Grapes of Wrath. John Steinbeck and John Ford investigated by Congress during McCarthy era for the pro-union stance in the Grapes of Wrath. Joseph Stalin bans Grapes of Wrath film in the Soviet Union because it shows that even the poorest American can own a car. 1989 - Grapes of Wrath among the first 25 films to be added to the National Film Registry in the Library of Congress In order to play Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath , Henry Fonda signs with 20th Century Fox for 8 films in seven years.
