Strategic Plan University of Missouri J A N U A R Y 2 0 0 5 X 2 UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS Strategic Plan Revised January, 2005 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has deFned its Purpose to be: Preparing Champions for Life! (© 1998 MU). The Mission is: To encourage every University of Missouri student-athlete to become a champion. To foster an environment where academic integrity, social responsibility and respect for others, and competitive athletic excellence are highly valued. To discover and nurture the “total person” who enriches the world and brings honor to MU, now and throughout life. Core values of respect for one’s self and for others, responsibility, discovery, and excellence shall guide the conduct of all programs in fulFlling our responsibility to the citizens of Missouri. Seven strategic goals and objectives follow from the purpose, mission, and core values. Strategic Goal 1: Develop and maintain outstanding programs that produce championship results in the classroom and in life. Strategic Goal 2: Develop and maintain outstanding intercollegiate sports programs which produce championship results. Strategic Goal 3: Enhance internal and external marketing programs and communication systems to promote the Department of Athletics’ championship results. Strategic Goal 4: Improve and enhance the Department of Athletics’ infrastructure with sufFcient and prudent allocation of resources to produce championship results. Strategic Goal 5: Obtain the financial resources needed to support the student-athlete as a total person and to produce championship results. Continually increase revenues from existing and emerging sources. Strategic Goal 6: Prudently allocate all funds in accordance with the Department of Athletics’ strategic goals. Strategic Goal 7: Expect an environment where gender equity and respect for diversity are fundamental components of the decision-making process.

Department of Athletics 3 INTRODUCTION The primary goal of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Missouri is to develop the student-athlete as a total person. The goals and objectives contained in the strategic plan are intended to develop Champions for Life in three critical areas: academic integrity, social responsibility, and competitive athletic excellence. The University of Missouri athletics program distinguishes itself by valuing the student-athlete as a learner, citizen, and competitor.
