Early Christianity: o New testament authors thought world would end quickly o Paul famous for spreading Christianity to non-Jews throughout Roman Empire o Paul on death: Dead person sleeps, awaiting resurrection A delayed union w/ the creator (“we the dead will be changed”) The Gospels: o Luke 20:27-40: Levirate marriage (wife of dead man marries his brother) Jesus sidesteps the Sadducees by saying that all marriages, sex, and special relationships will dissolve o Luke 16: Rich man and poor man in heaven Both taken to afterlife immediately after death (in conflict w/ Paul’s description) Book of Revelation: o Revelation 4:1 – 5:14: Prophet goes to heaven, seeing God on a throne, as well as many humans already there “Beatific vision” where the only purpose of the dead is to see and praise God o Revelation?: The New Jerusalem says ultimate award will come on a reconceived earth The early Christian movement:
