Lecture 8 – Mahabharatha continued Kauravas o Firs t child is born blind (Dhrtarastra couldn’t be king), second child becomes pale (Pandu) o Vy asa does his duty and goes back to the forest o Ga ndari, comes from Gandara (is married to first child…doesn’t know he’s blind however) o She blindfolds herself so she cant enjoy the pleasures that her husband is deprived of o She gives birth to 100 sons – Kauravas, + 1, Duryodhana (eldest) o Pan du, the successor, because he wasn’t blind, had two wives (Kunti + Madri) o On e day, he goes on a hunt, and accidentally kills a sage o Sag e curses Pandu that he’ll die when he has sex…therefore Pandu gives up his throneage o Un der this curse, King returns to the forest with his two wives, Kunthi (the older wife) is daughter of the king o Sag e says to Kunthi because you’re so nice, I’ll give you a powerful mantra, in which you can invoke any God you want o Ku nthi being curious, Sun god appears, she becomes pregnant
