Varna Varna-"colour" Translated as caste but different from caste; there is no equivalent English word for varna Refers to the division of the society into 4 castes References to varna found in Bhagavad Gita God has created 4 classes among human beings Earliest text which mentions the formation of the 4 classes is the Rg Veda Purusa Sukta hymn describes the cosmic person; speaks of the evolution from this cosmic person Classes: Brahmana -came from the head of the cosmic person Priest/teacher Ksatriya -arms Warrior class Vaisya - thigh Merchants/traders/farmers Sudra -leg Workers/labourers The Rg Veda also says that the Sun and Moon came from the eyes of the cosmic person This division of classes/varnas among human beings, according to the Rg Veda, is a natural order...
