Ashley B. Hilliard 258-10-0169 July 5, 2010-October 22, 2010 MG 665 Final Case Assignment Case Study Analysis: (50 points each) 1) What about the cultural makeup of El Paso makes the issue particularly difficult for all parties? How do the various parties’ interests collide? How do cultural, class, and religious distinctions contribute to the conflict? Can the two sides find common ground? El Paso is made up of many different religions, including a huge Catholic population. The Catholic faith believes strongly against abortions. Even thought the Planned Parent Hood Clinic in El Paso does not perform these procedures some of their clinics in other places do. Planned Parent Hood has been on the United Ways list of donors for many years. In this case I do not believe that the two sides can find a common ground. One organization will have to back down. 2) What should Furgeson and United Way do now? Why? Looking back over the last two years, what might Furgeson have done differently to try to prevent this confrontation? Royal Furguson and the United Way should take a stand for what is right in this situation. The Planned Parent Hood is in good standings with the United Way. So there is no cause to remove them from the recipients list. Furgeson should have put a stop the demands by the bishop and the anit-abortionist in the beginning. 3) How could the concept of principled negotiation ( refer to Getting To Yes) help Royal Furgeson? What common ground or mutual interests might United Way stress in communicating with the bishop? Can options for shared gain be developed? Negotiation is a dialogue intended to resolve disputes, to produce an agreement upon courses of action, to bargain for individual or collective advantage, or to craft outcomes to satisfy various interests. It is the primary method of alternative dispute resolution. The United Way should stress that there is not probable cause to remove the Planned Parent Hood from the recipients list. Yes options should be offer. One good example is that United Way offers donors the chance to designate where their money should go to.
