Chapter 9: Communication Disorders Communication disorders and language and speech disorders can all both be used interchangeably for this subject. It is defined as stuttering, impaired articulation, and/or language or voice impairments that affect the child’s educational performance. Communication is defined as an exchange of information or knowledge among its participants. Language is a system of symbols with complex rules, based on culture, and used to communicate. Expressive language is the ability to produce language. Receptive language is the ability to comprehend language. Both of these have five parts included which are phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.

Children who have problems talking or communicating have alternative systems that can help them. Sign language is one of the main ones, and is predominantly used in the deaf community. There are devices that turn text into speech and other devices that you press a button and it speaks for the person. These are all helpful in the classroom and everyday life because it allows that child or person to communicate needs or wants just like others do every day....
