10/29/10 Imperialism- begins end of 18 century and contributes to both world wars and cold war. Causes- Economic- trade (British wants to trade with China does not work until British acquires opium which China wants) Opium war starts over free trade. Europe interest in Africa because of Mineral wealth because IR and natural resources During 1870’s economic depression, begin to look at Africa to sell manufactured goods. Germany and France rivals to British Italy wants to show it’s a world power Cultural- “White man’s burden”-exploitation-Right to extend empire to other people Tools of Empire- Europe prevented from settling Africa near Equator- Malaria kills them- quinine prevents it so they use to so they can settle- river systems flow to coast and difficult to navigate but steam ships make it easier- refrigeration helps ship food long distances Telegraph lines- communicate long distances (Europe to Americas/ Africa Railroad-Transport people and bulky goods over long distances

Weapons- until this point were muzzle loading now they are breach fire. Smokeless powder/ waterproof powder- Gatling gun and machine gun India- permanent trade post established in 1757 near Calcutta- cannot effectively colonize so they give them a concession to East Indie Trading Company. Right to exploit and tax- Hire Hindus to protect EITC try to oust moguls- spread to establish ports along coast. British force moguls to remove tariffs so that they can export goods to India. Native industries can’t compete. England banned India textile import. India has no place to send goods and collapse- Deindustrialization-British want them to produce natural resources so that they can further there IR like cotton, sugar, tea, opium. Plant less food crops. Taxes switched from crops to money so you must sell cash crops. Hindu military force fight to China so British recruits Muslims and Hindu and Muslims don’t get along. Cartridges opened with teeth and lined with animal fat from sacred animals. This is the last straw so there is a revolt among Hindus- called great mutiny- fails because Muslims don’t join until toward the end. Ends in 1850 11/1/10 East Indi trading company pulled out, British administers India directly, send viceroy (governor) guarantees religious freedom and abolishes caste system. Revamp education system- conducted entirely in English. Establish universities. Most Indians embrace British. Create civil service start to think, look, and act like British except British look down because of skin color. Lay telegraph, build canals and railroads. Africa
