Types of Plate Boundaries divergent boundaries: mid-ocean ridges/continental rifts hot mantle material rises; partial melting yields basaltic volcanism sea floor spreading; new oceanic crust convergent boundaries: subduction zones/continental sutures subduction oceanic plates sink into the mantle and cause melting 2200 arc volcanism continent-continent collisions continental lithosphere too light to subduct, and thus, is deformed and thickened 2200 mountain belts – where plates slide sideways past each other (e.g., San Andreas Fault)
