EXAM 1 STUDY GUIDE GEOL 201: FALL 2010 You should be able to: [EARTH MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION AND DESCRIPTION] - IDENTIFY and DESCRIBE the characteristics of igneous rocks - IDENTIFY and DESCRIBE the characteristics of metamorphic rocks - IDENTIFY and DESCRIBE the characteristics of sedimentary rocks - DESCRIBE the difference between felsic and mafic materials - IDENTIFY common rocks and minerals, including granite, gabbro, schist, gneiss, quartz, feldspar, sandstone, conglomerate, limestone, biotite, muscovite - DESCRIBE the common constituents of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks (e.g., matrix, phenocryst, porphyroblast, groundmass, grain, pore space) [EARTH COMPOSITION AND MECHANICS] - NAME and DESCRIBE the compositional (chemical) and mechanical layers of Earth, their approximate dimensions, and their characteristics (rigid (brittle) vs. fluid (ductile); solid vs. liquid, etc.). For the compositional layers, you should be able to name the most common elements present in each. -
