6/3/11 Idea development is similar to quantitative methods Qualitative methods are a good way to study topics that haven’t been researched before They can be used to find out how to measure new topics As in quantitative methods, it is important to know previous research to fill in gaps in the Ideas and Literature Review

6/3/11 This is a project that myself and some classmates did for our qualitative methods course We wanted to know what people hope for and fear for in their future Our research question was whether people with mental illness have more limited expectations for the future than others Most of our literature review focused on the method of interviewing using the Possible Selves methodology Example: Possible Selves

6/3/11 I’m going to talk about my dissertation as a running theme to clarify each step I am interested in what helps people using intensive mental health services feel more in control of their lives, or empowered I have a particular interest in how their relationships with staff and peers at the program can help empower them I have four specific research questions about how people understand empowerment, what kind of experiences they have that help them Example: Empowerment Project
