Unformatted text preview: Research Methods PSYC E226 1/20/10 Learn about finding a topic area Finding a hypothesis within the research area Learn to find and use background literature Understand how PsycInfo works and know how to conduct a literature search Make sure that your topic area interests you A particular population A particular behavior A disorder or treatment Do background reading journal articles and major books in the area Keep an open mind, but read critically: would you do something differently to research this topic? A research question is a broad idea of interest. How does Head Start help children succeed in elementary school? A hypothesis is a specific prediction that is testable. Children who participate in the Head Start program before elementary school participate more in Kindergarten. Ideas are the first step: Consider your personal interests and curiosities Notice what causes you problems or concerns  Applied research aims to solve a specific type of problem  Basic research focuses on understanding how things work Observe the world around you: What do people do that you find interesting? More ways to come up with ideas Follow fleeting thoughts Reading others work Use journals and textbooks Also consider newspapers, magazines, and books can be helpful in generating ideas Build on behavioral theories that youve learned before What way of acquiring knowledge does each of these represent?...
