Cancer Exercise will not completely cancer but can help: people who are avid exercisers are much less likely to get breast cancer. Sometimes being active can increase ur risk of getting osteoporosis Exercise can significantly decrease ur mens’ chance of getting prostate cancer Increased levels of testosterone causes increase chance of cancer We need to exercise and eat right (stay away from high fat diets) Use sunscreen. No matter what. Fair skin increases chances of skin cancer. Osteoporosis loss of bone mineral density; more common in women do weight bearing exercise, get adequet calcium and vitamin d small females who are avid runners have increased chance. Smoking can cause osteoporosis Diebetes Type 1: juvenile/insulin dependent… pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin; we need insulin for our bodies to take in sugar into our cells has to take insulin Type 2: they produce enough insulin but their body resists it; caused by having too much body fat; usually caused by themselves; usually can control it through ur diet Diabetics have glucose levels above 126 Its possible to become type 1 diabetic later in life but it is very unlikely. Type 2 will happen to a lot of people if they don’t control life style. It is also genetic Exercise keeps ur body cells sensitive to insulin. Ergogenic Aids Anything that would help/enhance someone’s performance particularly an athletes performance: for example Provigil is used by some workers so they can focus and work longer hours. It can be anything, even things like coffee. They can also be psychological aids too. They can be legal or illegal: it depends on their affects and how much of an advantage they get Caffeine is a legal ergogenic aid up to a certain level. Carbs are a good aid. Creatine is legal in the U.S. but not internationally Sodium bicarbonate loading-used for short intense events like running Beta blockers are used for golfers some athletes use speed but it does not work Guest Lecture : Sociology is a scientific disipline that seeks to describe and explain human social organization and relations. -sociology is a tool for studying sports in society -provides concepts theories and methods for the study of sports What is sport? –physical activity –competitive activity –institutionalized rules (rules become standardized –official regulatory agencies take over rule enforcement -learning becomes formalized –external/internal rewards
