Leadership : 1.2 Polman’s leadership style The leadership problem faced by Unilever is that their CEO was not able to be the necessary transformational leader required in order to generate complete acceptance of the USLP strategy. He was not able to communicate the importance of the USLP outcomes in order to encourage stakeholders to see beyond their own needs to achieve their sustainability objectives. According to Fielder’s contingency theory, certain situation’s require certain leadership styles and the effectiveness of that leader is judged on their ability to influence the behaviour of all group members ( Wil liams, McWilliams and Lawrence, 2017) . In 2009, Unilever’s “market share and financial performance were deteriorating” with stock prices “declining 35%” ( Bar tlett 2016, p.2 ) . The situation required a transformational leadership, which Tyssen, Wald and Spieth (2013) have shown is the most effective in times of change and uncertainty. Williams, McWilliams and Lawrence (2017) state that the focus of a transformational leader must empower organisational members to adapt to the changes, motivating them to commit rather than comply to a formulated vision, which in Polman’s case, was the USLP strategy. This strategy required a “radical new way of thinking” from all stakeholders, which unfortunately, was not the case, evident with Bartlett (2016, p. 12) showing that the strategy had not been “fully embraced”. Polman’s lack of transformational leadership meant the stakeholders of Unilever were not inspired or motivated to do more than necessary to achieve their goals, they lacked commitment to the vision, which in time, created a disparity of opinions and highlighted the ineffectiveness of Polman’s leadership. Generation and Evaluation of solutions: 1. Retrain Polman to become a transformational leader Disparity amongst stakeholders would be assessed as Polman’s insufficiency as a transformational leader. Polman would undergo professional development courses in order to
