Laura Brady 1/14/10 Chapter One Summary Chapter one described the role that black fathers may or may not have in societies and how they are generally stereotyped into one category called deadbeat dads. However, what the authors are trying to do is break the stereotype and prove that there are many good fathers or father-like figures out there guiding children through their newfound struggles in life. Many fathers are out late working to provide for children, and are sometimes absent in that sense; however, they are still shaping their children’s lives in a positive way. There are also other adult male figures that are considered father- like figures to children and participate actively in their lives by giving them advice on such things as school, friendship, sex, drugs, etc. to help them avoid going down the wrong path towards trouble. These figures can be close male relatives, cousins, uncles, friends, stepfathers, or other older male that has a positive influence on a child’s life.
