The goals of criminal law are to: Enforce social control- used to counteract unwanted SOCIAL contact with a particular group or person that could potentially disturb social order. Examples: Collaborating with an enemy, planning terrorist attacks, planning to overthrow the government Distribute retribution- puts the pressure on the state after arrest and put in jail. Some still do want it to be individual sponsored, but most are happy with system now. This also helps the plaintiff of the courts’ case because they do not need to worry about the defendant getting out early because of lack of personal funds Express public opinion and morality- Some cases are clear-cut right or wrong. Others are not so easy to distinguish and are decided based on individual attitudes, conditions and facts Deter criminal behavior- Punishment as a result of crime.
