Introduction Touch forms as one of the earliest types of non verbal communication and exists important till today. According to Peterson, touch “is the core of sentience, the foundation for communication with the world around us, and probably the single sense that is as old as life itself.” Indeed, touch is “the most intimate of senses”. However, in business communication touch is referred as Haptic. There are various examples of touch such as: kissing, hugging, hand shaking, slapping, patting, and many more. However, the various examples of touch are applicable to people depending on their relationship and closeness. Hence, Haptic helps to portray a closeness and distance of relationships among people. Haptic Disrespect 3 (1983), the relations or situations in which touching occurs can be categorized into five discrete types: functional/professional, social/polite, friendship/warmth, love/intimacy, and Sexual Arousal. The situations portrayed above depict various types of touch related situations, however, in all those relations there is an important concept of cultural variations. Touching inappropriately, especially at a work place can result one from being suspended. However, this essay focuses on three major areas namely the general background of haptics, the relation of haptics and cultural differences, and lastly Haptic disrespect in business (work). Haptics Briefly, Haptic refers to the study of how we use touch in communication. In addition, the word "Haptic" originated from Greek word "haptesthai", meaning to touch. Furthermore, haptics plays an important role in nonverbal communication, enabling to show the intimacy of a relationship and define the boundary of what is an appropriate and inappropriate form of touch. Likewise, haptics can form a network of connection among people or it can disconnect people if it is used inappropriately. Haptics in communication can be in two forms namely, Haptic respect and Haptic disrespect. Relation of haptics and cultural difference Axcell, categorizes some cultures as “don’t touch,” “touch” and “middle ground,” Axcell uses those phrases to depict the orientations of different cultures in terms of touch.
