Begtine 1 Arthur Begtine McIntyre English 1102 7 th of February, 2011 The New Digital Being Technology has gone from something that we use when needed to becoming a necessity for most people . Many people rely on technology for many things that we used to be able to do by hand . The documentary Digital Nation, Life on the Virtual Frontier goes in depth and looks at the ever improving technology and how it is changing and helping to shape the world of today and the world of tomorrow . The documentary also goes in depth to see how its affecting the younger generation that only knows this new digital age. In this paper I will analyze the arguments from Digital Nation about increased necessity for technology, its use in our everyday life and the new digital world, the internet . First, technology has improved so much in the last few years that many people cannot survive without it . The documentary starts off by showing the huge place technology has in young people’s lives, especially college students for whom technology has become a necessity. Many of the students shown in the documentary could not function without their technological devices. In the days many of our parents were going to high school or college, papers used to be handwritten and documents and texts used to be read out of printed books. The documentary argues that this new technology is not always beneficial as it can be a distraction to many students . An example of that was seen in the when interviews done at M.I.T in Massachusetts showed that many teachers believed that students were fooling themselves into believing they were ‘‘great at multi-tasking’’ ( Digital Nation, Life on the Virtual Frontier ) . When the fact of the matter was most of them could not focus on a single

Studies have proven that people are less effective when they multi-task then when they focus on a single task. The first studies to put evidence behind many researchers and experts claims are being done at Stanford University in California . The studies showed that ‘‘multi-taskers get distracted constantly and are worse at analytic reasoning’’ ( Digital Nation, Life on the Virtual Frontier ) . Many experts shown in the movie believe that this need to multi-task and constantly be in touch with the cyber world is coming from the users addiction . Some people cannot be separated from their blackberries and Ipods without feeling very uncomfortable or
