Dance Exam 2 Study Guide Modern Dance: Began in late 1800’s and early 1900’s Isadora Duncan: Mother of Modern Dance. Very free-spirited. Created “Duncan technique” which was made of movements like hopping, jumping, skipping, and leaping. Led a very unorthodox lifestyle. Ruth St. Denis: Choreographer of exotic styles. Performed in Vaudeville. Ted Shawn: Married Ruth St. Denis and together they founded Denishawn, a dance company. Denishawn school was used to educate the “total” dancer, spirit, mind and body. Shawn created Jacob’s Pillow on his own, all male dance company and still exists today. Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman: developed technique based on fall and recovery. Emphasized pull of gravity. Martha Graham: Most famous choreographer of modern dance. Many dances were based on Greek mythology, indians, and pioneers. Used rebellious styles such as, contract and release, flexed foot, and parallel positions. Created 181 works. Received Medal of Freedom. Eric Hawkins: Grahams first male dancer. Technique was “free-flow” Katherine Dunham: African American. Negro Rhapsody. Also influential
