LaMontagne 1 Whitley LaMontagne Professor Keith English 1102-40 W 30 March 2011 Enslaved by Gender: How gender is detrimental to role of a child soldier How many individuals choose their gender prior to birth? None. It is foolish to ask such a question, seeing as gender is an ascribed status, a role, which one has no control over. It is understood when a mother bears a child she may aspire for one sex, over the other, however, there is no possible way to control the outcome. As for the child, regardless of gender, their childhood will consist of parental guidance, as the child learns about the surrounding world. On the other hand, there are children who have the guidance of war commanders instead of birth parents. These war commanders present a different perspective, of the surrounding environment, to children. Kids under any armed forces authority, are known as child soldiers. The term child soldier refers to any individual eighteen years old and under, regardless of gender. However, the gender of a child soldier is detrimental within the armed forces concerning the sex of a child, as girls are subject to even further abuse than boys. Regardless of age, sexism is a global issue and both men and women are victims of various circumstances, based on sex. It is through sexism, which allows for unequal distribution of wealth, power, and privilege between men and women, also known as gender stratification. According to John J. Macionis sexism itself “drives men to relentlessly seek control, not only of women but also of themselves and their world” (Macionis 279). Macionis addresses the issue of the natural assumption, which men are understood to be superior over women. However, it is this superiority, which often hurts men as well as women.
