LaMontagne 1 Whitley LaMontagne Professor Haley Film: Cruel and Unusual 4 March 2011 The film Cruel and Unusual highlights the growing problem of transsexuals and how they are treated in today’s society: specifically through the criminal justice system. When a criminal is found guilty the current criminal justice system detains the individual according to the gender, which they were born with. This situation introduces the issue of the transgender person as well as gender identity. According to Macionis transsexuals are “people who feel they are one sex even though biologically they are the other.” Such feelings among transgender prisoners complicate the adjudication of crimes, as well as affect the lived experience specifically for the transgender individual among peers. Being a transgender individual is seen as being deviant in society. The unwillingness by society to accept such ideology makes it difficult for transgender individuals to blend within society and often leads these individuals to more deviant acts.
