LaMontagne 1 Whitley LaMontagne Professor Haley SOCI 2201 – Spring 2011 15 February 2011 Putting People Back to Work The article that I chose was Putting People Back to Work located in the Special Advertising Section in Time Magazines’ February 21, 2011 edition. At first glance this article appears really appealing because the title is straightforward and there are three specific sections: unemployment, achievement gap, and foreclosure crisis which compare race graphically. It is because of these graphs that I chose this article because the first graph I saw was the unemployment comparison of whites and blacks. Although I was not surprised to see blacks having a 15.8% unemployment rate compared to the whites at 8.5% I was just curious to see just how the article may defend just statistics. Unequal opportunity? Lack of education? These two questions were just the basic two that went through my mind. However upon reading the article I had two disappointments. One of which was the article not having an author, or anyone to claim the work. Another of which the article serving as an awareness article for the National Urban League, NUL, and their efforts to increase employment in desperate times rather than direct statistics comparing races and how they are
