Unformatted text preview: Logan Jordan English 102 Dr. Christina Bucher 2-15-2011 Microtheme 2 What is organic food? www.dictionary.com defines organic as noting or pertaining to a class of chemical compounds that formerly comprised only those existing in or derived from plants or animals, but that now includes all other compounds of carbon. Since organic means only coming from plants or animals, organic food is food that is made by only using chemicals and sprays that meet organic standards. Joel Salatin pushes this definition further by refusing to send Michael Pollan a chicken and a steak because he believes that it is inorganic to send meat across the country. Joel Salatin states, Just because we can ship organic lettuce from the Salinas Valley, or organic cut flowers from Peru, doesnt mean we should do it, not if were really serious about energy and seasonality and bioregionalism, (133).
