Unformatted text preview: Logan Jordan English 102 Dr. Christina Bucher 2-22-2011 Microtheme 4 The single key factor in many parts of life in determining the degree of greatness, averageness, or horribleness is emotion, which is the centerpiece around Michael Pollans assertion that there is a difference between pain and suffering. Pollan states, Suffering in this view is not just lots of pain but pain amplified by distinctly human emotions such as regret, self- pity, shame, humiliation, and dread, (316). What is so remarkable about this notion is that emotion is not only the key to many beautiful things such as music or art, but is also the key behind the most agonizing of pain which is suffering. As a musician, I believe the true key in the difference of great music and a piece that is average is emotion so therefore I cannot but whole heartedly agree with Pollans statement about emotion being the key factor in the difference between pain and suffering. Pollan also goes on to bring up the point that language is a facet of between pain and suffering....
