Example Problem Description Consider the minimum weight design of the four bar truss shown in Figure 1. For the sake of simplicity we assume that members 1 through 3 have the same area A 1 and member 4 has an area A 2 . The constraints are limits on the stresses in the members and on the vertical displacement at the right end of the truss. Finding the optimum solution with Excel Solver Loading the Solver Add-in Before you can use the Solver, you must first load the Solver add-in into memory. When you installed Excel, you were given the option of installing the add-ins that ship with Excel. If you chose to install the add-ins, you can use the Tools Add-in command to load Solver into memory. If you did not install the add-ins, you must do so before using Solver. To load Solver into memory, follow these steps: 1. Select the Tools on the main menu. Figure 2 shows the submenu of Tools 2. If you find Solver on submenu of Tools , then Solver is already loaded into memory. Skip next
