Annum Hassan Experiment date: 10/23/09 Due: 10/30/09 Lab #5: The Wittig Reaction Purpose: To use microwave radiation to heat a witting reaction and separate the products using column chromatography. Discussion: I used the NMR spectra to figure out that the major alkene formed was the trans isomer. When looking at the spectra, I saw two locations in which the peaks were at ratios of ten to one. The bigger peak is the major conformation and smaller peak is the minor conformation. To figure out which conformation was trans and which one was cis, I used coupling constants. Trans products are supposed to have coupling constants of around 13 Hz and cis products are supposed to have coupling constants around 8-13 Hz. The coupling constant of the larger doublet is 15.8 Hz and for the smaller doublet, it’s 11.9 Hz so this shows that the larger doublet, which is also the major product, represents the trans isomer and the smaller doublet represents the cis isomer.
